You know a few butts are hurt when you see this kind of freestyle typing going on, aimed at Narnia Dispatches:
Jake was photo shopped at the press conferences, his voice was CGI. He was never there. Jake was also not on the red carpet because those were old photos that management planted on every media outlet. And Lily Allen's dress was being lifted by the wind and not Jake's hand. - posted by an "anon" at the blog next door.
Not quite sure where all of that was headed. Of course Jake was going to appear at Cannes, smh.
It was about 3 1/2 weeks ago (May 18, 2017) that Jake Gyllenhaal "landed" in Nice, France for the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, after several weeks of down time with the family.
There he is, the lil' denim & chinos scamp!
We were expecting to see the California dad at Cannes because the announcement had been made well in advance, at least by April 13 and we were not disappointed. Jake was there for the first event, which was the Okja photo call.
There he is, looking quite nice and stately...But, it didn't take long after the first couple of released photos for this Cannes Festival steam engine to veer off onto the Jake Track. 1001, 1002, 1003...

And the hubs' Walking Dead co-star Steven Yeun was in attendance as well:

Gotta love those photocall honeymoons! Don't worry, it only gets more entertaining. *smirk*
Then came the whole red carpet for the premiere of Okja and rather than see much on Twitter as far as reviews were concerned, the main focus of Jake's time at Cannes can best be reflected in these robot tweets which took over his social media search like a garden bed of Dead Nettle.
Every women deserve a Jake Gyllenhaal ! The way he took care of Lily Collins ' dress ! Awwww! #PrinceCharming pic.twitter.com/asISVr3cdd— Attention (@BadGal4Live) May 21, 2017

I think by this time, Jake was beginning to feel a case of the #GirlCooties! coming on, lol:
But don't forget this "impromptu" shot which really made the rounds. How lucky we were that someone actually captured the moment! *grin*
— Perfect Shot (@bestofmoviesntv) May 22, 2017
And then a delayed release for this photo no doubt to eek out another couple of weeks' worth of bot-generated memes, infringing on this "stolen" moment:

By now, this Soul Train line of Jake's was running on a blend of Starbucks Double Shot, Monster Energy, Full Throttle and Red Bull.

Look at him go, eh? Oh, it was something, alright, lol. ;-)
Then, came actual showtime. And apparently, a bump in the tracks.
Disaster at OKJA. Movie starts with top of image cut off. Audience who already booed Netflix card clap, yell, scream. (1) #Cannes2017— Gregory Ellwood (@TheGregoryE) May 19, 2017
How on earth could @Festival_Cannes not see this mistake in pre-screening test? #okja #Cannes2017 (2)— Gregory Ellwood (@TheGregoryE) May 19, 2017
— Gregory Ellwood (@TheGregoryE) May 19, 2017
Mr. Ellwood, a co-founder of HitFix as his twitter profile states, did go on to give Okja a glowing review. But as his initial tweets stated, the technical glitch was befuddling. And when one searched on Twitter for reactions, what was the headline in several tweets?
#Netflix booed at Okja’s #Cannes premiere https://t.co/WICTsESvEx pic.twitter.com/8kLgWCpybY— Movielizer (@Movielizer) May 22, 2017
— Bingham Lofts (@BinghamLofts) May 20, 2017
Later on, this tweet would change to a more favorable one, but why wasn't the standing ovation mentioned earlier? And more importantly, why did the "gets booed" headline prevail on Jake's twitter search when another Netflix film, Meyerowitz Stories, received an instantaneous, High Five:
The Hollywood Reporter: Cannes: Netflix's 'Meyerowitz Stories' Gets Four-Minute Standing Ovation at World Premiere. https://t.co/L3rOVdHhnL— yvonne barry (@deenay1o) May 22, 2017
Of course, later we heard about a "four minute standing ovation" for Okja, but that was not what you saw on Jake's twitter search in real time. Instead, the buzz about the film was all about how the showing was "interrupted by boos". This, despite hearing about the technical glitches which caused the delay of the film and affected viewing clarity. Indeed, perplexing.
And just when you thought you had successfully maneuvered around the Paul Dano honeymoon and bridesmaid train-carrying sideshow here came a new one, the Thinker twitter meme from the Okja press conference:
— rach (@nigtcrawler) May 21, 2017
😍 "@aliciamalone: Went to small press conf for Okja at #Cannes2017 & every photo I took #JakeGyllenhaal was deep in thought." pic.twitter.com/081zIRxDMm— JakeGyllenhaal FF (@GyllenhaalicsFF) May 21, 2017
That picture and subsequent ponderings on why Jake looked so pre-occupied, solemn, and in his own lonely world during the cast photo shoot did indeed take on a short life of their own. But, alas! Jake's chewing of the cud will have to become but a distant mystery - too deep for this author!
It really is unfortunate that from a Jake perspective, Cannes 2017 will be remembered as 48 hours of dress holding. Okja sounded quite fascinating with an animal rights' angle and the cast really did look quite resplendent on the carpet; I bet there wasn't a more picturesque group. Looks like Paul and Jake forgot they were supposed to be tending the dress here...
And this was a nice one of Jake:

So, another whirlwind film festival come and gone. In retrospect, one can make the observation that the SXSW and Cannes film festivals that Jake attended this year have been primarily used as a backdrop to
promote his public image (SXSW - bromance with Ryan Reynolds) (Cannes, shipping
Jake with Okja co-star Lily Collins) rather than about his movies. This is yet another clue that he is in
the closet with a growing family. Not living a life in the open; rarely seen. On the rare occasions he does appear in front of the cameras due to his
profession, his management team grabs the opportunity to try to humanize him.
The consequence is that his films are not the focus of his public
appearances - his stunts are. Seeee, he has friends (remember that
whole nonsense about Jake living next door to Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively and coming over to
cook all the time?). Oh, and don't forget that he also loves young attractive
females. Hence the bridesmaid photo ops with Jake and Lily and the other numerous photos of them together. Kind of the 2017 version of Pippa Middleton. ;-) Truly,
Jake's team has gotten their money's worth out of the last two film
festivals. Too bad his films are taking second billing.
Now before the Cannes Train was ready to steam on home, let's not forget that whole.......pretend excursion on a boat with strangers (who were those people anyway? Anyone??? Names???) and alleged staying over for a screening of The Killing of a Sacred Deer on May 22. A lot of blue screen pictures (with strangers) and smoke blowing to "extend" Jake's stay at Cannes. A little bit of the usual Kool-Aid to keep it "Jake" real; kind of to be expected, really.
Yes, of course Jake needed to attend Cannes. He's always promoted his movies and Cannes has become a frequent name on his promo dance card. And no, Austin nor the family needed to be in France while Papa worked, for they had all been together in the weeks prior to. :-) Isn't that how family business trips work, after all? Whadya say, Don?
