"A Mark, a Yen, a Buck, or a Pound; Money Makes the World Go Round"


Whether selling an obligatory straight image, an "it's not you, it's me" onliness, or an upcoming film project dropped just in time for an awards season consideration, Jake Gyllenhaal and the concept of subtly have never quite been the most compatible of companions. The most recent example of this assertion being the obvious juxtaposition of Jake with a surprising number of newfound African American pals, kindred spirits who are apparently nearby every time Jake gets near a camera.

The curious phenomenon actually began with Jake and an out of the sky date night affiliation with Jay  Z and Beyonce back in 2014.  The photo op ready moment was captured in a meme-inducing high profile appearance, the cozy  three occupying courtside seats at a Miami Heat-Brooklyn Nets NBA basketball game. That's some nice bookended symmetry from Sasha Fierce and the original Queen Bee, don't you think?  Or, was that self-proclaimed moniker from 2010, Pampered Princess, Jake?  Oh, and what a nice choreographed touch with Mr. Carter's hands clasped together as if he's a mere third wheel in this "girl talk" rap session. Camera? What camera? 

In this instance, Jake gets a two for one, without much effort. Selling his "I live in New York" narrative,  and his cool chumminess with the African American demographic. Jake didn't have a movie to promote at the time. But, the date gives away another reason for the stunt appearance. May 10, 2014. That fateful "The Day After Tomorrow" audition meeting between Jake and Paul Wesley's fake new "boyfriend" Austin Nichols!

Of course when The Daily Beast's Marlow Stern produced the photo for a Vanity Fair article on the actor, Gyllenhaal “lets out a hearty laugh,”and plays it coy.


Writes Stern:  “Right, right,” he says, losing his composure for the first (and only) time all interview. “I have no idea what’s going on there! I have no idea, man. We’re definitely in the midst of something, that’s for sure.”

Later on when the "Rihanna photo" appeared, the fertile soil bred yet another viral round of  "low-key" memes and robot tweets which were a little like...

This time, however, the high-profile photo op with Rihanna occurred during the promo for Southpaw, at Jay Z's "Roc Nation Sports Throne Boxing Event" on January 10, 2015.  A movie heavily marketed to the black community so cha-ching definitely comes to mind here.


Several more Gyllenhaal movies have come and gone since that Roc the house encounter with RiRi:  Everest, Demolition, Nocturnal Animals, Life, and Okja to be specific.  Yet somehow no further promotional attempts to associate himself with African American celebrities took place. Well, that is until now.

Using his newfound New York stunt vehicle of the fashion show, Jake was suddenly seen after the Labor Day holiday with Lupita Nyong'o, Mahershala Ali and Trevor Noah at the Calvin Klein Collection event. Just after jump-starting his latest marketing efforts for Stronger, the biographical story of Jeff Bauman, a civilian who became an amputee as a result of a terrorist bombing at the Boston Marathon in 2013. This cozy gathering of fashionistas seemed impeccably quaint and "fortuitous" don't you think?  *wink*

By the time Jake posed with Nikki Minaj backstage at Jimmy Fallon's Tonight show, the train was humming along on the tracks:

Suffice it to say, Jake's people have never grasped what it means to practice a less cynical, and slothful approach to selling their closeted client's professional wares. All they know is that movie attendance for Whites and Hispanics has actually declined in the last several years, while tracking data from 2013, specifically points to African Americans going out to movies 4.2 times more than the latter, paler demographic which clocked in at only 3.4 times.  Who cares if Jake looks Machiavellian and unbelievably conspicuous in his desperate search for black "friends," when he needs them. Although he doesn't seem to mind as he proudly smirks at the camera, and poses for yet another "candid" moment. Say, "Cheese, Everyone!" Or, is it fleece? In any event, black exploitation in films certainly has a whole new meaning in this contrived context, doesn't it?  

Hey, Jake! Isn't that Blac Chyna over there? An entrepreneur and a model. And, she's in the news a lot lately, with that Kardashian association. You might even be able to work her into one of those revealing interviews you love to give and talk all about how she used to be a stripper.  Let's face it, you can only be shipped as Jeff Bauman's boyfriend for so long before people start talking. I don't think anyone would think any further if all of Jake's movie promo circuits were inclusive. But Life was all about Ryan Reynolds, living next door to each other in the 'burbs of NY, cooking together and BFF's, etc. With Okja, it was all about Lily Collins and dress train carrying and black/white Glamour Shots. With Nocturnal Animals, it was all about Tom Ford and Jake's body hair. Same with Love & Other Drugs - that one was all about creepy Ed Zwick and getting in bed naked with his two leads, sex lives and oh - and sex. Everest was kind of a dud all around, lol. Enemy was all about ol' Denis, as was Prisoners, although Prisoners promo became about the bromance of Hugh & Jake. Nightcrawler was all about the dramatic weight loss. End of Watch kind of started the whole ball rolling with the periodic demographic aiming.

And this is how movies go, right? They do aim for particular audiences. But when I saw Jake posing with Nicki Minaj, I cringed so bad. Nicki Minaj I put right down there with Kim Kardashian and fame hungry. She's on Just Jared every single day doing the slightest of activities.

Anything to sell a movie, I reckon.

The whole CK fashion show photo op the night before he left for TIFF was as bad as Jake appearing at a boxing match in Vegas before Southpaw's release. At TIFF, Jake was professional. He was looking great - promoting his movie. And then came the interview part of the promo once the festival was over, and slop like:

Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany may have some amazing on-screen chemistry in their new film Stronger, but nothing beats the off-screen love affair between Gyllenhaal and the movie’s inspiration, Jeff Bauman. The two became so close during production that Bauman’s friends now refer to Gyllenhaal as his “boyfriend.” - etalk.ca

It would be interesting if Ryan Gosling's team follows this same kind of lead.

Regardless it looks like Jake likely has a big hit on his hands with Stronger. I wish him all the best and hope he gets the recognition that he has been wanting for so long. Maybe if he gets that Oscar nom, he'll chill a bit and his Twitter search can stop looking like it's running on Red Bull. Could go the other way however and it'll just get worse. LOL.

That was well done, M&M. The statistic you found on demographics and movie attending finally explains the round of promotion leading up to TIFF, which was a head scratcher. Used to be Jake just attended a basketball game and oggled an actress going up stairs, lol or cheerleaders on the floor. Now he "hangs out" at fashion shows, just like Big Sis. Well, I guess the reason for the fashion shows does make sense after all, when you compare it that way.

After seeing a few quotes from Jake (one from the 9/11 Charity Day in particular)this press junket time around, it's becoming more and more evident just how much time he's spending with his sister and probably mom as well. It's just that evident. Oh, now I remember the other quote - it was about giving Ang Lee an award "somewhere". As though he couldn't remember at all what award it was or where it took place, even though I believe the event just took place last year. It was a very superior-ish comment and I just don't recall Jake sounding snobby before. But that's how it sounded and about Ang Lee, which is just mindblowing because he seems like about one of the most humble and gracious persons in the business.

Anyway, not to be too negative this morning. Apologies for the bit of hiatus. M&M and I have had some pretty interesting happenings going on this past week, which were occupying and requiring immediate attention.

These activities will be coming to light at some point, don't know when. But Mgmnt can be quite assured that she and I will be discussing it on this forum. There's a time and place for everything. We don't shy away from much and this new post is kind of reflective of that.

Wow, now this is interesting. Remember K'naan? All of a sudden around the filming of Enemy I think it was, Jake went through this period when he was constantly seen with K'naan, even going on a stroll around NYC with the matriarch Gyllenhaal to try and show how close he was embraced by the Ghaal fam. He just came to my mind as someone else that Jake was big-time associated with around a movie filming but now is no longer seen with. And look what I found. A CDAN blind "reveal".

Last year, this Academy Award winner/nominee paraded her boyfriend wherever she went. The two of them were inseparable as she did the Academy Award press gauntlet. They seemed happy, but underneath were secrets. The first secret is that the boyfriend had actually stalked the actress and knew where she would be at certain places and times and managed to show up and the next thing you know after a few of these meetings they started dating. As they continued to date, she began to see the dark side of him. The same dark side that she should fear right now and that another A list mostly movie actor felt for some time. See, prior to stalking our actress, the boyfriend did the same thing with the same setup to the A lister. He would show up to the same exercise classes and bike rides and befriended the actor. It then turned into a Cable Guy situation and our actor had to break things off. He tried but the stalker kept showing up until finally the actor got the police involved. Our stalker is currently trying to win his girlfriend back by harassing her agent and management team and still showing up unannounced whenever he learns where she will be.

#1, it gave Lupita a reason for a "break up". #2, it gave Jake an answer why he was no longer seen with K'naan anymore because I remember pointing that out before back in the days of OMG.

What are they even trying to do with this blind? Lupita has had strong rumors of being a lesbian and it was interesting to me that after winning her Oscar. Now I look at the comments on one of the sites where the Blind reveal was reposted Not using the CDAN link and people are making a good point about security and handlers.

That whole blind is hinky as hell. And bike rides? Since when was Jake going on bike rides all the time in NYC? please. CDAN can be such a PR tool.

oops, I kind of had an incomplete sentence. I meant to say that it was interesting to me that Lupita, after winning her Oscar, really disappeared quite a bit and in fact, went to Broadway. She did get a role in several Star Wars vehicles, although one of them was as a voice. I always found it fascinating. You never see her on Just Jared (sorry, that's just a barometer I use) and she seemed headed for incredible things. I always kind of wondered if she never wanted to play the HW game of bearding and such, so she wasn't getting a lot of role offers.

Now comes the photo op with Jake and I was just surprised. One thing to really pay attention to with OTP's and that is to watch who helps them out with photo ops. Particularly with Jake and Austin, it seems a lot of the time, the only ones who will help them out are those who are in the closet themselves. It's a win-win situation, they all provide cover for each other.
