Our Evening At Sunday In the Park With George (and Mr. Gyllenhaal) - April 2017

This is not only the sharing of an evening's experience, it is the sharing of a whole four unforgettable days, spent with friends who have become acquainted through the internet and a blog - Oh My Godot.  The holiday reunited those of us (although we were minus one important member - M&M, due to prior obligations) who have kept in touch and wanted to share this viewing of Jake Gyllenhaal's musical, Sondeim's "Sunday in the Park With George" together.

So there we were at the Hudson Theater (in alphabetical order!):  Destiny, m (and her hubby!), myself Prairie Girl, Special K, and the blogger formerly known as JerseyTom, but now Florida Tom.  ;-)
We came from all directions across the U.S. and converged on New York City to see Mr. Jake himself and the experience was to be treasured.

lol - I'm terrible with the eraser thing - look at that.  But there's the eTicket and we even had these nifty passes for the little room where you could act like a semi-big shot and sip the bubbly:

Except the lounge didn't look like that at all!  lol.  Where did they get those pictures?  ;-)   Unfortunately, my pictures will continue to follow the pattern of the "eraser app edit" and go southward because "PG" is phone camera challenged.  But first, the aesthetics.

You can sort of see Jake's name beyond the name of the hotel, as the scaffolding came out of nowhere and got in the way:

And here are a couple of shots I took inside the theater - don't ask why I didn't take more - don't know what was going on with my head.

Not quite sure at what point the ground level picture was taken, probably at the very beginning when the orchestra was warming up.  And then you see people often taking pictures of this neon light sign - it's inside the lobby when you walk in:

lol, that gentleman was not a member of our party, nor the coat check employee on the other side of the coat rack - I couldn't get a better one because people kept hanging around the sign! plus I had to keep up so as not to get lost or left behind, ha ha.

And this is typical, right?

I think Jake is right behind that person's head!!! No joke.

Certainly this seems like a Clark Griswold photo album thus far (or better yet, that of a Jake Gyllenhaal photo op), but perhaps it lends a note of authenticity, no?

**UPDATE**!!!  TWO NEW PICTURES COURTESY OF OUR OWN FLORIDA TOM -  Thank you, Tom!!

The musical was entrancing from beginning to end. From the opening scene between George and Dot to the emotional ending.  All of the characters were cast well, with Jake, Annaleigh, Phillip and Boykin making the biggest impressions on myself.  Jake did an outstanding job and Annaleigh was perfect as Dot.  She has incredible comedic timing.  And Phillip Boykin has a most impressive, rich, beautiful voice.  To hear him speak outside at the stage door was magic to the ears.

[SCENE SPOILER COMING UP]

The crowning moment of the musical was the conclusion when Dot leads George Seurat past the park people as the song "Sunday" begins in reprise and I was touched beyond words.  I had already loved that song after first hearing it; to hear the beauty of the lyrics and melody live on stage was a spiritual experience.

The Hudson Theater was a charming historical building, quite intimate and small, actually surprisingly so.  The Millineum hotel where I stayed at was actually next door to the Hudson. They are owned by the same company, so it was rather awesome that you could go out the front door and be right next to the entrance of the theater, or go out the opposite back door and you were literally right at the stage door.  It came in quite handy.  :-)

Special K and I did the stage door thing, yessirree.  We were there after one of the afternoon shows and then I went down after an evening performance because I wanted to try for an autograph, although unsuccessfully.

Dropping the phone didn't help, but anyway, here are a few pics:

And let's hear it for the full length shot!

And how about even a tiny bit of video:

And I do mean tiny bit.

It takes a very patient person to stage door - once is good.  I mean, literally Special and I were there that afternoon one and a half hours!!  It took 1 1/2 hours for that guy to come out.  After even an hour, it's a matter of wills and you are going to stand there, aching feet and all, until the bitter end - no going back!

But it was worth it because what happened that day??  Guess who was led in on a leash and escorted by a female through that stage door the afternoon we were there, probably about an hour into the whole stage door vigil?

"Leo Gyllenhaal".

Didn't get a picture of him, only saw the ears and then the whole back end of him as he was escorted through the door by the female.  And I turned to Special and I said, "What was THAT?!  What was THAT."  To the point where she had to "Shush!" me, lol.

And look what appeared on Instagram that same evening - the finished product:

LOL!  "Leo Gyllenhaal" being brought to the theater for his photo op and Insta-Story.  Funny thing don't you think, that Leo didn't arrive until after the first show?  And where did he come from?  Was that supposed to be the dog sitter?  Dog trainer?  Whaaaa.... And when I was at the stage door later that same evening, I don't recall seeing Leo with Jake. And I had an excellent pole position - nope, don't recall seeing "Leo" with Jake as he came out of the stage door and proceeded down the line of fans.  Was Leo just running late?  Or did the celeb shepherd leave earlier in the evening?  Why come at all, then, if he misses the first show and were to miss the end of the second show?  If he didn't leave with his papa, who took Leo home?  Isn't that whole pondering just interesting?  I thought so.

via GIPHY

Any way.....not to get too hung up on the whole Leo mystery. In neither stage door experience, was I there in its entirety. There were things to do, places to go!

Indeed.  For this was The Big Apple.

Incredible skylines!

Central Park and pretty spring blossoms!

THE Met!!  Yes, where the Met Ball was just held - look how massive:

Chinatown, Little Italy, Greenwich Village, SoHo, Times Square, Wall Street, you name it, I/we were there...

The Brooklyn Bridge, which Destiny and I crazily walked the afternoon that I arrived!

The New York Stock Exchange...

Isn't the stained glass just breathtaking?  I visited two churches, Trinity Church where Alexander Hamilton is buried and St. Patrick's Old Cathedral...

And Little Italy

Picturesque brownstones and colorful doors...

The cutest community garden...

Flower shops, corner shops and bakeries galore...

 Tulips everywhere!!

And people and crowds!

At night, the crowds don't stop!

And we saw a George Seurat painting that was showing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art,  Circus Sideshow (thank you Destiny for wanting to take us there!):

And the somber and impressive 9/11 Memorial and museum:

We all shared an unforgettable meal and fellowship prior to Jake's show at Carmine's:  Grand Poohbah Special K, Destiny and her girlfriend, m and her husband, OMG friend Roma, Tom and two of his buds, and myself !!  It was the meal to beat all meals, everything was absolutely wonderful:

The play was the most I could have hoped for in experiencing my first Broadway show.  Jake was so good and brought so much to the character of George Seurat, along with a very, very good voice.  The ending stuck with me and I found myself thinking about it for a day or so afterwards, even tearing me up a couple of times.  I saw in Jake, a very nice young man at that stage door, quite soft spoken, almost genteel in his dealings with the fans.  He signed playbill after playbill, took picture after picture with fans, and was engaging, friendly, humorous.  That was a side of Jake I am so thankful to have witnessed in person. And that's not to sound like an utter idiot; it is indeed different to see someone in person.

But most of all, what this trip brought was an appreciation and gratitude for the friendships that have endured amongst us OMG'ers and those we're meeting through each other's friendships and relationships, like with Roma, m's husband, Dest's partner and Tom's friends.  What a wonderful time we had with Tom's friends, a HUGE THANK YOU for one of them to walk with me from the train to the corner of my hotel, lol.  What a nice gesture that was.  And the day that Special and I spent with Roma was also so, so memorable - will never forget it, the Spotted Pig, the bakery, the art show, the rain...   And Destiny and her gf?  What can I say?  I'm forever indebted for their time and generosity - what memories we made and it was just one of the best times I have ever had - the Sunday afternoon at the Met was perfect, an awesome Irish pub.   Lots of chatter and hugs and laughter.

Again - Jake and Austin brought us all together and we all risked meeting each other, we reached out and look what we still have.  It's really a miraculous and enriching permanent part of our lives.

So, thanks to all who participated in this excursion and Lord willing, we will do it again and hopefully, M&M can join us on the next round.  ;-)

Special Shoutout:  to Special K for giving me her extra Playbill after I lost my two that I had and I'm not sure what happened to them.  It was a near tragedy! But she saved the day.

Trains, Cars and The Great Escape

Sometimes Jake's people let their guard down just long enough for their official narrative to take a hit.

About three and a half weeks before Sunday in the Park with George opened, Jake began to very publicly be placed in New York City in preparation for Previews, which kicked off on February 11th.  [Recap: Jake began 2017 with the highly visible St. Bart's photo essay, which circulated well into the new year. The Caribbean respite then quickly morphed into his appearance at the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills, CA on January 8, peaking with a spotting at the Taco Bell in Southgate MI on January 14th.]

And, not surprisingly, since Jake's return to the Big Apple for the duration of his Broadway show, his daily social media searches have been stretched to Violet Beauregarde levels of hot air inflation. A torrential flood of memes and robot tweets followed one after the other, not only stretching credulity, but making the head spin with the seemingly omnipresent flow of nothing to hide Jakeness.

via GIPHY

Right? lol.  Social media activity filled with tweets and Tumblrs on being "robbed", being under-respected, not knowing how to hold a dog, not knowing how to physically run with dignity

the way he looks at Heath, Natalie, Anne, and a host of others from his life history (except Austin Nichols), sharing gum with other men at the Tony's, catfishing Amy Schumer, picking up bagels off the subway floor and eating them, just to name a few.  Yes, these and more have been robot tweeted with an obviously robust purpose.  It's a way to fill up space - this author likes to refer to the phenomenon as "Twitter Botox".

However, while Mgmnt has been busy stuffing Jake's social media activity, what they had forgotten to do was to continue carrying out their client's "living in New York City amongst the people" and waving-from-the-front-porch narrative.  From previous time periods in NYC, Jake has been reported to be: sitting against brick walls drinking coffee at La Colombe, grabbing a workout at the gym or Soul Cycle, reading books on the subway, walking down the middle of random streets amidst the taxi cabs with earbuds, standing on subway trains [see December 9 2014 tweet of being a "subway stud"], entering crosswalks with the likes of Marcus Mumford.... No, Jake wasn't seen to be doing any of these previously routine, papped activities and in particular, pictured or tweet sighted on the NYC trains. (Jake and trains being the key rinse and repeat words.)

Then, a few weeks ago (around February 20), this Tumblr post appeared:

http://closetwithaview.tumblr.com/post/157524041371/myirishjaredlove-yesterday-i-went-into-the-city

Oh wait that was interesting; read that again, what did it say?

"After the show i waited outside to meet Jake! It was terrible cause he was heading to the car and I was farther down on the line so I walked up like everyone else"

Since that time, Mgmnt has tried to gradually up their game a bit.

Real New Yorker™ level unlocked: saw Jake Gyllenhaal on the subway.

On March 8, these two tweets were particularly entertaining:

This tweet above was interesting because the picture is an old one. And it appeared in Jake's search timeline on March 8, although the date on the original says January 17.

And it was on March 7, that this particular robot tweet below had a resurgence in life after being in incubation from the first go-around back in October of 2014 (not particularly easy to "dig up" an old tweet like this unless you have a link):

See how that would subliminally work?  Repeat, repeat, repeat an association and the mind associates or is "reminded" that Jake lives in New York City now and he is a "regular" on the subway.

Even though, @myirishjaredlove reported seeing him headed to a car after the show.  Interestingly enough, there just are not tweet sightings of Jake on the subway trains prior to or after his shows this year.  There have been several random ones, but they are few and far between. Which lends to the curious question of why this practice would pretty much cease to non-existent this time around?

Just wondering.  :-)

Thursday at the Airport With Jake - A One-Morning Performance

(Reader warning:  There's an "F" word and graphic picture used in one of Austin's instagrams in this post)

via GIPHY

One bleary-eyed blink and you would have missed it.  I mean, the alarm clock needed to be set mighty early to catch this one.

While we're not positive where the "mom" is, we know that this tweeter is in....New York City.  Since she says "the airport", that seems to infer a local airport for her.  If it were an airport in another state, I would think she would refer to the actual name, but I'm not going to throw down the gavel on that one.

As is always the case with Jake and Austin, there are rarely cold steel, smoking guns.  You have to look at the events surrounding, leading up to and following a sighting.

Last we left this rumbling, stumbling pair, we had Jake in New York City performing Sunday in the Park With George at the Hudson Theater, following a stop-off and run for the border at a Taco Bell in Southgate, Michigan.  And Austin?  Well, Austin was in Michigan as well, we assume driving the rehab-bus after his sister and bro-in-law skipped town.  ;-)   For further reference to this, please see:  source

Well, this current weekend, Austin is SUPPOSED to be in London at a Walker Stalker convention.  It had been set up since last year. Well, lo and behold, what happened?  Let's allow Austin to "break" the news to us, starting with his tweet and Instagrams from March 1:

And another Instagram on March 2:

austinnichols  Gettin on a plane to London

But by Friday morning, something had gone terribly wrong:

Then in what I'm sure could be an attempt with some humor to set fans at ease...

Pfft!  That's it.  He's done.  No other flights available, I guess.  No mechanics around. Throw in the towel.  Pack up the camping gear and go home.  Don't pass go, don't collect your $200, just call a cab and pick up a sandwich for the ride back to....where?  Michigan where he's the bus driver for his recuperating father?  Austin, TX where all of his vehicles are located in his garage?  Or to Los Angeles, where he visits the beard, I mean girlfriend, according to Maxim magazine?

[Aside:  Oh but wait! Guess the patriarch Dave Nichols is "on the mend".  More on that later.]  But in the meantime, we will scratch Michigan from the short list of return-destination possibilities.

We return to the tweet sighting of Jake at the airport on Thursday morning and wonder why it could have been viable?  We know he couldn't have been departing because he had performances stateside to do this weekend.  And this airport tweet came at 05:33 am ET. That's pretty darn early. Could he have been giving his boo Austin a lift to the airport for his weekend trip to London?  I doubt it. These two guys have parted ways due to business trips an endless amount of times. Nothing new there.

Or could it be that Austin was coming in on an arrival flight? Couldn't he have taken a cab from the airport, though? Surely - after all, how incredible of a driver could his hubs be?  But wait. What if Austin and the Baby Tiles had still been in Michigan, but were coming into the Big Apple?  Could that explain the very early arrival?  Less chance of being seen.  And it could explain why Jake would risk being spotted because he could not wait to see his children.  He likely had been waiting to see them for some length of time, how long we are not sure.  But waiting nonetheless.

And as has been the kind of luck that Jake has had sometimes - well, he got caught. Again.  Now, let's throw one more log onto this little campfire.  Who has a birthday coming up this Wednesday, March 15?  Jake's mom, Naomi Foner.  And who could have been disembarking on this wee-hour arrival flight to help celebrate? Possibly her grandchildren - the Baby Tiles en masse. Two tweets from last night's Sunday in the Park performance:

Since Wednesday falls during the work week, it's very possible that a 71st birthday shindig is being/has been held this weekend and that's why the grandchildren were flown in.

To help deflect and flag wave through, we had some help from the two rumblin', stumblins'.  Let's take a look:

Austin in Los Angeles?  But of course.

And Jake?

and

Because we know that Jake playing with other people's children for the world to see, must mean he couldn't have any of his own.  Yeah, we know, bud.   Nice try.  ;-)

Huzzah! Let everyone have cake!

Another rare Twitter catch.  And another round of broken planes and Broadway backstage moments.

Btw, for those wondering about the patriarch Nichols, looks like he's "on the mend" from that quite-serious, mysterious malady his son-in-law wanted all the world to know about.  From the well-timed re-opened Instagram account of Austin's bro-in-law, any curious questions on Dave Nichols status have been generously answered:

A post shared by Rowdy (@rowdyatx) on

Interesting details to these pictures are noted.  It's good to see that Austin "returned" to where he was more badly needed, isn't it? Taking care of his fur child in LA. Instead of the wheelchair bound dad that Randy is selling via his Instagram account.

And that's how you know, what you are seeing is what PR wants you to see. What is actually happening behind the scenes is not going to be posted on Rowdy or Austin's Instagram. Who would like a slice of birthday cake, now?  Order up!

It All Starts With Previews - Sunday In the Park With George (and Jake Gyllenhaal)

For the Broadway theater impaired like myself:

Previews are a set of public performances of a theatrical presentation that precede its official opening. The purpose of previews is to allow the director and crew to identify problems and opportunities for improvement that weren't found during rehearsals and to make adjustments before critics are invited to attend.
- Wikipedia

Good luck to Mr. Jake Gyllenhaal, whose musical Sunday in the Park With George by Stephen Sondheim will begin previews this evening, February 11, 2017 at the Hudson Theater, located at 139-41 West 44th Street on Broadway.  On Wednesday the 8th, Jake and his co-star Annaleigh Ashford cut the opening ribbon for the historic 1903 playhouse which was refurnished and is being used for its intended purpose for the first time since 1968.  What an honor!

The musical was inspired by a painting called "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat, dated 1884.

No wonder the posters for this musical are so beautiful! And knowing this now, I had to wonder what would the ever enlightening art analyst Sister Wendy think about this painting and, lo and behold!  If you know nothing at all about art, Sister Wendy can take you on the most wonderful of journeys and make you feel like you can go to an art museum and not feel so lost anymore.

From Sister Wendy's "American Masterpieces":

"Seurat's Grande Jatte is one of those rare works of art that stand alone; its transcendence is instinctively recognized by everyone. What makes this transcendence so mysterious is that the theme of the work is not some profound emotion or momentous event, but the most banal of workaday scenes: Parisians enjoying an afternoon in a local park. Yet we never seem to fathom its elusive power. Stranger still, when he painted it, Seurat was a mere 25 (with only seven more years to live), a young man with a scientific theory to prove; this is hardly the recipe for success. His theory was optical: the conviction that painting in dots, known as pointillism or divisionism, would produce a brighter color than painting in strokes.

"Seurat spent two years painting this picture, concentrating painstakingly on the landscape of the park before focusing on the people; always their shapes, never their personalities. Individuals did not interest him, only their formal elegance. There is no untidiness in Seurat; all is beautifully balanced. The park was quite a noisy place: a man blows his bugle, children run around, there are dogs. Yet the impression we receive is of silence, of control, of nothing disordered. I think it is this that makes La Grande Jatte so moving to us who live in such a disordered world: Seurat's control. There is an intellectual clarity here that sets him free to paint this small park with an astonishing poetry. Even if the people in the park are pairs or groups, they still seem alone in their concision of form - alone but not lonely. No figure encroaches on another's space: all coexist in peace.

"This is a world both real and unreal - a sacred world. We are often harried by life's pressures and its speed, and many of us think at times: Stop the world, I want to get off! In this painting, Seurat has "stopped the world," and it reveals itself as beautiful, sunlit, and silent - it is Seurat's world, from which we would never want to get off."

Sister Wendy on A Sunday on the Island of Grand Jatte

No wonder the song "Sunday" is so beautifully and tranquilly inspired.

So good luck to Jake and all of the best wishes for success in this limited run. Knock 'em out of their socks, buddy.
