One Year Later - Remembering Kay Vermeulen Nichols

Of course, those in the Jake and Austin fandom knew Kay Nichols as Austin's mom.  But she was known for so much more, and long before Austin came along.  For anyone who didn't know her personally like myself, we rarely find out someone's personal qualities and gifts until they are gone.  I learned more about Kay Nichols by reading guest books, online tributes and the Clark Lake Spirit website than I ever would have known otherwise.  What a special lady.  I've always said the highest compliment any of us can have said about us when we've gone is for folks to say you were a good person. That you were kind. Positive. That you took time out for others.  Forget everything else, all of the professional accolades and trophies on the mantle.  It's how you touched other people that leaves the lasting impression, your imprint on this earth after you've gone.  That's your gift.

“She was an Austin water ski icon for sure,” said family friend Dick Gilliam. “Kay was one of the most genuine and nicest people I’ve ever known.” - My Statesman.com

So, on this September 12, we think of Austin and his family because as so many of us know who have lost one or both parents, that first anniversary is especially tough.  We don't know probably even 1/100th of the extent of her impact on Austin, but we know that Austin is well-liked on his film sets, spoken of well by others, has shown admirable work habits, exhibited high respect for co-workers, and has amassed many, many friends.  These are traits of someone who was raised by caring, mindful parents who handled their life role so well, and in that sense, the apple no doubt did not fall far from the tree.

Of course a boy grows up to be a man. And, that man must make choices that will ultimately define who he is. Austin is a product of his upbringing, as well as the environment and circumstances he has chosen to identify as his home. The closet is despicable in many ways not only because of the lies that form the rock solid basis of the institution, but because of the techniques used to bury any trace of same sex narratives. Publicists and management teams will use the amoral exploitation of any event or occasion to advance their must-be-heterosexual goals, without regret or apology. Birthdays, anniversaries, special dates, whatever can be devalued and defiled is all up for grabs in their dirt bag world of heteronormativity.

One notorious example of this de-gayification practice, happened at a Lakers game in January 2009 when Jake Gyllenhaal and his second multi-year contracted beard (yes, Kirsten was fake as well) Reese Witherspoon, staged an awkward, but high profile game kiss cam moment that just happened to be spread far and wide in real time.  The goal was not merely to post several cozy pics (including one of Jake “kissing” his “girlfriend”), but to even more importantly sully the well received photos of Jake’s Lakers’ photos from his actual date with Austin Nichols, back in February 2006.  Austin is not innocent either. Because he later participated in the same demeaning exercise by being photographed courtside with his own beard, Sophia Bush, in 2011.

Jake and Reese Witherspoon, Lakers Game, January 4, 2009

Austin and Sophia Bush, Lakers Game, May 4, 2011

Although this kind of inverse mirroring is to be expected in closetland, sometimes the level of despicableness that is reached, exceeds all expectations.  September 12th is the first year anniversary of the passing of Austin’s beloved mother, Kay Nichols. Yet, instead of the weekend remaining quiet and respectful, or Austin using his social media in tribute, the world is met with another one of Chloe Bennet’s inane and sleazy video snapchats. A narrated description of an unidentified sick man (whom she refers to as her boyfriend) lies in the darkness on a bed, while she adds:  “I'm taking care of you, baby, all weekend in Austin, Texas.”

Truly an unbelievable act of repugnancy. And, beyond the pale of any stunt these two dimwits have participated in over the three insipid years of their fake relationship. Whether or not Austin was actually in that video is irrelevant. The point that cannot be ignored or excused away is obvious. Even on the anniversary of his mother’s death, he allows his public image to be used to sell a fauxmance.  I know Jake is desperate for that Oscar nomination, but the lengths to which these two will go truly boggles the mind.
At this point, a quote from the Army-McCarthy Hearings delivered on June 9, 1954, can be revitalized with renewed meaning and poignancy: "Have You No Sense of Decency, Sir?"

Don't let anyone fool you. The closet is not just about maximizing profit, image management in a global economy, or a performer’s privacy. It’s about the dehumanization of others and of us for casually accepting the outrageous when the unacceptable is visible for all to see.

Aaah yes, good morning. Kind of feel like you were punched in the gut a tad after reading the post? We were not trying to be manipulative or shocking or disrespectful. What was written was the truth. And sometimes the truth hits you like that. It's not always what we envision or want to see.

For anyone interested, here is the video which appeared online on an Instagram (gee imagine neither involved party wanting this on their own Instagram timeline, let's give it to someone willing to take one for the team). It appears to have been posted very early in the morning yesterday, 9/11.

It is appropriate the curtains are drawn on this scene

Whether or not that is Austin in the bed, is irrelevant nor clear. It's too dark to see, isn't it? Imagine that. And why would the beard be trying to place herself in Austin, TX this weekend? She's working now, correct? But she takes time out to go to Austin to be with her "sick boyfriend". Mgmnt knew that we knew today was the first year since his mother's passing away. They knew that. And so just like they made it look like the beard was in Austin TX the weekend that Kay actually passed away, they did it again this weekend one year later.

The purpose and goal of the video was for 1) Austin being "sick" would explain why he would not be on social media this weekend nor would he and Bennet need to be seen "out and about" or carrying on. The second purpose and goal was 2) to take the opportunity to push that Bennet is on that intimate of a level with Austin and a member of his family.

I'm not sure what guided Austin to participate and allow this to occur, but as for Bennet? I don't know what kind of loathsome mind says "Yes, I will participate" to their Mgmnts in putting on such a show.

And while at the time a year ago, I didn't feel like posting what occurred last as it was watched unfold, now we'll take a look at what happened last year at this time and how Mgmnt tried to actually hide that Austin was with his family when he no doubt was really with them and that Bennett was present as well. Be sure and watch the dates.

Back on the 10th, came this cryptic tweet:

Such an amazing family. Prayers for Kay and the Nichols family. She is so graceful and strong. https://twitter.com/austinnichols/status/630735510202220544

09/11/2016 Meanwhile, Jake is promoting Demolition at TIFF2015
TIFF opening night

09/13/2016 At around 06:00 on the morning of the 13th, I notice that a fan has tweeted to Bennett, @thephoebonacci "I hope everything is okay *praying hands emoticon* praying for you

This tweet was in response to Bennett's tweet which was likely around midnight on the 13th:

"Everyone going to @LongBeach_CC I'm soSO SORRY to say that I'm going to have to cancel last minute. Family emergency."

09/13/2016 This tweet appears, placing Jake in NYC.
@RayKat_: My brother partied with Jake Gyllenhaal last night and I'm super jealous.

09/12-13/2016 At this time the Amy Schuler story about her renting Jake's NYC apartment and eating birthday cake from his refrigerator goes viral and soaks his Twitter search along with the reliable robot tweet of him not knowing how to carry a dog. Dominating his search doesn't even begin to describe it.

9/19/2015 There is a second memorial service to be held on this day, Sept. 19. I believe it was for Michigan friends/family who wanted to come down to Texas. Chloe Bennett posts this on her Instagram, a picture of what is supposed to be the Nichols family kitchen or Austin's kitchen, who knows. It's a moody morning down here in Texas (said in Texan accent) - also hi

Yes, she posted the picture and called it a "moody morning". I have absolutely no words.

So there's a timeline of that week and if someone wants to try and convince me that Austin was vacationing in Cabo and shopping in the week leading up to, you've got a long road to hoe, so long you better go to True Value Hardware and buy up all of their hoes and rakes because you're going to need them.

prairiegirl said...

I watched all of that in real time. I watched as Mgmnt set up a false storyline that Austin and Bennett were in "Mexico" all that week, they brought them back to LA for her superhero convention or whatever Con that was, Bennett arrives on Saturday tweeting and blabbering on and on about running late, she's on her way, she's coming! She does appear at the con taking her photo ops and then late that Saturday night, Mgmnt begins the process of "pulling" Bennet from the con because of a family emergency.

When in reality, there was no Mexico, no shopping, there was never leaving LA for Bennett. She merely stayed in hiding because she was supposed to be in Austin TX.

To help keep up the storyline, in a statement composed by Rowdy Stovall, Austin's brother-in-law, Rowdy states that Austin was present for his mother's passing via "Facetime". This was to maintain consistency no doubt with the whole story that Austin was "on his way back" from LA.

Yeah, it's all pretty stomach wrenching, isn't it? Folks can form their own belief, own opinions about what happened. These are my thoughts on the whole event. But when you know for a fact that this "relationship" is false and you know how ill his mother was and the kind of illness she was suffering with, I have no doubt this whole performance was all concocted to cover. It was to cover that 1) Bennett was not with him and 2) that Jake was with Austin at some point.

I have no doubt Jake was with Austin by the 12th or 13th. None. His twitter search filled up with a ridiculous story, but this is something that happens with his search whenever the family is on the move or there's an event to hide. His people fill up his twitter search to distract and also to try and snuff out any possible GPS leaks.

I don't care that they needed to hide this. I totally understand and I felt for both Austin and Jake. But why carry on at all with this entire ruse? Why?
I will never understand that.

And now one year later, one of these guys' parents' death has been treated just like a birthday and anniversary, and some of us know exactly what that entails.

Either way, thoughts go out today and hopefully Austin just continues to stay unplugged and be there for his dad.

Sorry if some of this was distasteful or you couldn't finish reading it. It is pretty tough stuff. But I know my reasoning for wanting to finally say something was to (like M&M said) show how a deep HW closet operates and to what lengths personal events are hidden from the public, in particular a fandom.

Is a family member's passing any of my business? No, not unless that artist chooses to share the news I reckon because it can be a very private, traumatizing event. I guess when I begin to look at it differently however, is when this event is used to embellish and the public lied to.

And when you look at the planning, coordination and execution of a story by publicist teams to protect who was in attendance at that family gathering of grievance, you can see that Jake and Austin's closet is very complicated and it is a deep, deep one, so deep that I can't even fathom.

A Love Song for My Mom by Moby was my choice and M and M chose the Pet Shop Boys' Go West. I really like the Go West song, it's peppy and proactive. Love Song has long been a favorite of mine and it is just so serenely beautiful.

Sorry to post again, this will be my last one. But I wanted to kind of correct something:

Kind of feel like you were punched in the gut a tad after reading the post? We were not trying to be manipulative or shocking or disrespectful. What was written was the truth. And sometimes the truth hits you like that. It's not always what we envision or want to see.

Perhaps the word "reality" would have been better to use than "truth". What is laid out here in the post and comments are actual tweets and Instagrams. They were really posted (by someone, anyway). The timeline dates are actual. They are fact.

The interpretation of the timeline and what happened behind the scenes is just that - an interpretation, my interpretation. So in review "truth" was not a correct word to use. So apologies for that! It just was impossible to go back and edit that comment because Blogger won't let you edit comments.

I've never heard this Moby song before. So beautiful! Too bad I can't say that about the rest of this post. The tastelessness of that video is just so mind-boggling. Even if it was a real couple, and there wasn't such a sad anniversary, I'd still feel the same way.

destiny said...

I really enjoy the Pet Shop Boys song too. Kind of nice to have a peppy song to help chase off the blues, so to speak.

prairiegirl said...

Oh, I know, Dest. Isn't it just the most hauntingly beautiful piece of music? So inspired. And yes, then the Go West. I really like it, too, and you're absolutely correct on the need for a mood change. M & M and I discussed the angle of the entire post. We both agreed that this second video was just the last straw. Bad enough that entire ruse last year to cover up the behind the scenes truth.

But to do it all over again? Austin could easily have just gone radio silent over the weekend and Jake has been MIA since one day of the Venice Film Festival, so what would be any different? No one would ever have known. For pete's sake, both of these guys need someone close to them to give that snap out of it smack across the back of the head.

Who did these actions hurt? Not any of us. Not any fans. Not the public. Not Jake's family.
They hurt the honor and memory of someone who is gone now.

Anyway, there it is. And you know, tomorrow will just pick up and continue on.......
