Berlinale - Day 21

Thirty Days of Toothy Tile, Grey Goose and the Baby Tiles

Day 21

The dust had barely settled from the Sushi Lunch in January of 2012, when February became another car on the Jaustin Train of "Can You Believe It?!!!":

We knew that Jake was going to be a judge at the Berlinale Film Festival in Germany which was scheduled to take place from Thursday, February 9 through Sunday, February 19.

But, here he is looking rather solitary in London back on February 1. While in London, Jake was photographed working on his music video and dining out. For the most part he was pretty much hidden for public view.

On February 7, we had photos of him arriving at the airport in Germany, looking quite excited to be in Berlin. He was greeted with fanfare, pomp and circumstance. Here's that famous Gyllenhaal smile.

So to recap, Jake was in London from February 1st through the 7th, but three days later on the 10th this smile producing, but not completely unexpected celebrity sighting occurred at Heathrow:

Well, well, well.   Sounds like a tall Texan was bringing up the caboose, so to speak.  ;-)
And since Austin was identified and called out on social media by Dana Delany, perhaps the guys figured well, what the heck, the cat's out of the bag now.   And we were privileged to some spectacular shots of our fave twosome partaking in some of the more behind the scenes social events at the Berlinale Film Festival.  The first picture is a side-by-side.

In the other video footage that we have of them together (which I had mentioned in the previous post), we have some delightful interaction, which shows they were there as a couple.

Around 0:55, you can see Austin near the wall and Jake is chattering away with another young man before introductions are made.

This video was taken at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin on February 11th.  It was the prestigious President's Reception; not just some free-beer-nuts-and-stale-pretzels-at-the-hotel-bar soiree, but a suit and tie reception, the kind of event which would seem to be for Festival notables like Jake and his special plus-one. Oops! I mean guest.  Otherwise, that would have been one heckuva party crashing maneuver on Austin's part.

Aaah yes, Berlinale, circa 2012.  A special time indeed - almost seemed too good to be true - late date-night tweet sightings in LA, Jake driving Austin's truck, the sushi lunch...and then the evidence that Austin most likely had been with Jake in London. All of this, followed by the President's reception sighting and red carpeted stairs appearance. Even though Austin seemed to pull the shy card and quickly turned around so that his back was to the camera, sneakily dashing up the stairs.  ;-)

In other words, one and a half months of unprecedented visible coupledom, which had never been seen before.  The question became at this point, with Jake's new WME contract having been recently signed, would the joint public appearances continue and eventually lead to a glass closet existence? Or was all this newfound openness merely an aberration?

Unfortunately, no one had long to wait because the answer was already revealed before Jake even boarded the plane out of Berlin. The scripted rumors had begun to circulate about him and Lea Seydoux flirting at a late night party. To look the part of the angsty tortured soul which was all part of the remake of Jake's image, he began to grow his beard out and had some bizarre encounter at a hair salon, with Jake huffing and puffing his anger out about the "intrusive" paparazzi. Still, the interlude of love that Jake and Austin shared with the world for one brief shining moment at the beginning of 2012 will live on in memory and in photographs/video footage.

Remember the final chapter has not be written on these two. Who knows what the future will bring. No one is holding their breath, but Jake has been known for the unexpected. He is a risk taker by nature. Surprises are his specialty.
