The Resistance was Hard - Day 2

Thirty Days of Toothy Tile, Grey Goose and the Baby Tiles

Day 2

It was said on the original Waiting for Toothy blog that Jake and Austin had met at the auditions for The Day After Tomorrow, a movie Jake would go on to star in as "Sam Hall" and Austin winning the role as "J.D.".  The character of "J.D." was to be a minor character, but at some point, this changed and Austin found himself with more lines and screen time.

With auditions occurring in May 2002 and filming for The Day After Tomorrow not beginning until November, it is apparent that during the time in between, Jake and Austin's relationship and mutual attraction had reached far beyond the casual interest stage. Austin showing up in New York City at Club Lotus with Jake on June 26, 2002 is evidence of the bond they were already forging.

If you have a copy of the movie, be sure to check out the time period when Sam, Laura, J.D. and Brian escape to J.D.'s family apartment and watch for this moment, when you can see Austin's wrist subtly bend outward to touch Jake in this scene:

Even in a camera still, the outward angle of Austin's wrist is obvious. Although they had spent 6 months together on set, it was no surprise that Austin immediately landed a role in Wimbledon, which happened to star Jake's beard at the time, Kirsten Dunst. This allowed Jake to continue the romance with heterosexual credentials throughout the summer months of 2003.

By the following year, Jake and Kirsten's two year "relationship" suddenly ended, while Jake was in Canada filming Brokeback Mountain. Just a few months later, Austin announced that he and his "high school sweetheart" of seven years, Claire Oswalt, had parted ways as well. The longstanding "couple" kaput, after an "engagement" that was portrayed as ending so badly that Austin had to sleep on friends' couches for months.  Poor guy apparently had no friends. LOL!

Funny how just a few months later on February 27, 2005, Claire accidentally was photographed with Jake and Austin at a post- Oscars Vanity Fair Party. Guess that horrible breakup was not so bad after all, huh? Better yet, how about the concept that they never broke up at all because they were never together in the first place.

"Jake and I played tennis a few times when we were filming in London," [during Wimbledon] said Austin Nichols, "I've learned a ton from Jake. He's really a sharp guy. He told me everything about acting, the business, girls, and life." Paper Magazine, April 4, 2006.

Thanks, Austin. I'm sure those in depth conversations about girls were quite enlightening. *wink* As you can see these boys were inseparable from the moment they met. Love/lust at first sight, from those in the know who witnessed the sparks. Both men's promising futures already destined to be lived together.

These posts are going to be pretty much in chronological order from the start of Jake and Austin's relationship to where we are now.

Again, there is no better daily source than Oh My Godot.com because back in 2007 when the blog started, the guys were in the midst of being the hot topic of the internet with talk of a baby. The rumors of something between Jake and Reese Witherspoon were starting up and it's fascinating to watch the daily comments and see it all unfold from that point.

Those were some of the early days of the internet and OMG (for short) was a tiny corner sharing space with several other big Jake blogs because Jake was huge back then. And back then, OMG had a lot of commenters from all over the world. When I came along in 2008, there were still quite a few folks and I can remember carrying conversations into the wee hours of the night because there would usually be somebody up.

But gradually things changed. Live Journal was one of the first places where chatter about Jake being gay and with Austin began to be shut down. The censorship began.

And slowly over the years, as Jake's public persona changed, the other Jake blogs began closing up shop. When I first joined Twitter, there was what I would almost call a real fan posse of Jake's around and they chatted on a daily basis, led by the enthusiasm of a woman called mermon7. She adored Jake and she was an expert to watch operate on Twitter because she would somehow get just about anyone who saw Jake to talk to her about their experience. She had a real knack, a real talent for drawing information out of people. But then she passed away suddenly and you know, somehow that seemed to be a catalyst for just draining the life out of that group of fans and nearly all of them are quite inactive if not non-existent on twitter.

So many of Jake's original old fans are all gone now. Twitter is filled with all of these "new" accounts and I suspect many to be operated by Mgmnt interns, partly because they all began to appear around the same time.

And Oh My Godot began to become trolled very hard. OMG lost many posters, especially after Berlinale in 2012 when we all thought the guys were trying to inch out of the closet in January/February. When it became clear that was not what was going to happen, well - that was about all she wrote.

And fans left the comment sections in droves. OMG lost many long time regulars until it was just a few of us who remained. And the Paid Management Troll from WFT2 smelled blood and he came at OMG with a vengeance, spamming our threads with copy/paste nonsense, shutting down the blog by forcing it to be put on moderation.

Well, there's no better way to kill a blog's discussion, right? So combine the troll's attacks and overall lack of interest in Jake and Austin plus disappointment, this is where we stand now.

It's quite the story. It's an archive of what happens when young love happens, then the closet enters and differences of life wishes happen....but people's interests change too. There's always going to be someone "new", a new television show or movie with a new couple that fans latch onto and so part of it is just the natural flow of life.

Jake and Austin's story continues and so this series is a highlight timereel of some significant occurrences which point to our belief that these two guys are still together to this day.

And since this is partly my blog now, I have to say this. That talk of the Baby Tiles was never received well. People did not want to talk about them, didn't want to believe it, didn't want negative chatter, we're nuts for believing, we're horrible for thinking that Jake and Austin could bring children into the whole equation.

And I just sit here and look around and those folks are all gone now. They left OMG for whatever reasons and some of us were verbally attacked or criticized for trying to point out what we believed was going on. That Jake and Austin were raising not just one child, but clues were pointing towards more.

Well........what can you say. A part of me will always hope that something will change, but I don't hold too much on to that. But it doesn't mean that I've lost interest at all. There wouldn't be Narnia Dispatches or @goosestile if that were the case. Jake and Austin will always be my OTP. Always.

They piss me off sometimes, but I still root for them. It's an incredible story and one that has led to other great discoveries. Afraid it's like almost in the blood now. ;-)

Guess that makes it kind of a sad story, huh? It's kind of weird. There's still a tiny core of us around. Jake and Austin brought together this group of people whom we never would have met each other had it not been for these 2 guys. We've been to visit each other, shared meals, talked on the phone, share an email. There will always be a connection because of that. Would that happen now? Probably not.

The internet is pretty different now. Heck, there are folks on a Jared & Jensen blog called Spn Goss who accused me of being PR. LOLLLL!!! Still trying to figure how or why that would be.

But let's put it this way. This is how different things are now. Back in 2007-2012, OMG had basically one main suspect who trolled the blog. Now? On Twitter and LJ alone, you have accounts who have been created to be the coyotes in the chicken house. That's how far along things have changed and Mgmnt is trying their best to get a handle on and control Twitter.

The WFT2 troll stalks my twitter account and will interrupt/interfere/harass anyone I engage with, trying to intimidate and discredit. That is how threatened, intimidating and how controlling PR is.
