Much about Jake and Austin's romance has been filled with magic throughout the years, but nothing will ever surpass the tale of the floating shoes. That's right, levitating footwear of the mid-air variety. The closet can be a mysterious place when it comes to a management team's ability to conjure up a trick or two. All that's needed is to simply add in a sandy beach, a few carefully cropped photos and voilĂ , instant rumor mill of the hetero variety.
January 26, 2006
Of course, Jake's shoes [red arrow] were not really floating in mid-air, if the right photo was located because Austin Nichols, always the Texas gent, was actually carrying them on a Malibu beach. Jake and Austin walking together along the beach? How enchanting one might say! Well, it would have been except for a certain interloper of the female variety: Sophia Bush.
Oh, and let's not forget that the ocean encounter was first posted on various fan blogs on January 26, 2006, right before Jake was predictably nominated for his Brokeback Mountain Oscar. Back then, the focus was on Jake the "It" guy of the moment. But, after a certain set of iconic photos appeared on February 11, 2006,
the photo shape-shifted to focus on a different couple, released the very next day on February 12.
Then on February 15, 2006 here came PEOPLE.com to spin PR's version of events:
Sophia Bush's Two Good Men
According to the rumor mill, One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush is dating not one but two eligible bachelors: Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and actor Austin Nichols (Glory Road). "We all met up on a hike and, apparently, I'm with both of them," she says of the tabloid buzz. "If I have to be in the company of men, I'm glad it's those two."
Right, Sophia. Just remember Austin was carrying his own shoes that day. Not yours. And the floating shoes next to him (carried by someone else) was definitely not Sophia's either. Only three words needed: The boyfriend's footwear.
P.S. Oh, and about that orange jacket of Austin's worn in the photo op? Looks like Jake wore it a couple of months later in April that same year. In New York City.

Good morning, everyone! Waiting for my niece to get up so we can all go out to breakfast. I hope everybody is having a great weekend.
(If you are on social media) do you ever have days you would like to blow up your twitter feed, unfollow some folks and start over? I think Austin tweeted that once, lol.
I could get off of social media right now and not look back.
I’m sure there are many many times folks mute my accounts, LOL. I can be quite irritating with my obsessions as well and I know that.
Aaah the joys and downfalls of social media. The positive still outweighs the negatives so I remain on it. But would be nice to get back to my writing. Heard from an LJ mutual and it was nice to hear that kind of encouragement and exchange thoughts on writing.
